Pete Buttigieg has emerged as the surprise early leader in the race to become the United States Democrats' candidate for this year's presidential election.
With almost two-thirds of the vote counted in the Iowa caucus, the 37-year-old holds a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders with about 27 per cent support. The count has been delayed by voting glitches, with officials blaming ballot technology for the chaos.
