The small painting was sold for €24m.

A small painting on wood depicting Christ Mocked was auctioned for 24 million euros.

According to a French critic, the work is by the great master Cimabue. For those who do not know who Cimabue is, according to Dante Alighieri he was the greatest painter of the generation prior to Giotto's.

For decades the small painting was hung in the kitchen of an unsuspecting French lady and was recently auctioned in Paris.

The buyer remained anonymous, but with his investment he set a new record: that of the highest ever paid for a pre-Renaissance picture.
