Bartolomeo Pietro Sanciolo moved to Australia in 1968 aged 13. He had very little English and among the many changes he faced he also ended up adopting a new name.

Our regular segment dedicated to bilingualism in the Italian community hosts Bartolomeo Pietro Sanciolo.

When he started attending an Australian school in 1969 he quickly realised his name was impossibly long. He became 'Bob' and later adopted the name 'Bart'.

Growing up he maintained the Italian language, but didn't insist that his kids learn it. Now he is trying to encourage it with his grandchildren.
