Nicola Zingaretti, the governor of the Lazio region, has been elected as leader of the Democratic Party.
More than 1.6 million PD supporters cast ballots at makeshift voting booths around the country over the weekend, a much higher turnout than expected.
Zingaretti, whose brother Luca plays the lead role in the Italian TV police drama Inspector Montalbano (also shown on SBS), won more than 60% of the votes.
