The United States' Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon, on 20 July 1969.
The broadcasting of the landing would not have been possible without the role played by Australian technology.
After Canberra's Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station received the first eight minutes of the broadcast, NASA diverted to Parkes for its superior image quality.
Santo Cilauro, one of the writers and producers of the movie The Dish, which tells a somewhat fictionalised story of the Parkes Observatory's role in relaying live television of the Moon landing, tells SBS what it took to produce the movie.
