Monreale, sits high up in the mountains overlooking Palermo and, being sufficiently far enough from the sea, it depends on its meat trade. The pretty and bustling town boasts a thriving collection of well stocked butchers, one of which provides Aldo and Enzo with the lamb cutlets needed for their dish of Sicilian-style lamb. But, before they set up kitchen in the town square, Enzo and Aldo, each have a very close shave.

 

Sunday at 5.30pm on SBS Food - A Gondola On The Murray

 

Not far from the Murray River, vast areas of the countryside around Mildura grow wheat and barley. Stefano cooks a magnificent wheat cake known as a pastiera Napoletana with Loretta Sartori, one of Australia’s leading pastry chefs. Out on a Mallee wheat farm he has afternoon tea with a pioneering couple and visits a beautiful old Tuscan style church. With some barley, he invents an unusual and easy dish. Instead of rice he cooks the barley and stuffs capsicums with it. Finally in this episode he invents another dish. He bones some quails which he marinates Asian-style before cooking them on a very hot skillet.

Chefs Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro explore Italian resourcefulness through the enterprising food skills of the Lombards. Gennaro tests if he has the ability to live by l'arte di arrangiarsi (the art of making do), and insists that he and Antonio only eat what food they can get for free. They enjoy chestnut gnocchi, bresaola, and fresh butter. The pair also learn from some of Italy's last remaining partisans just how tough life got in the mountains during the Second World War.

Wednesday at 8.30pm on SBS Food - Silvia Colloca's Cook Like An Italian

Silvia starts with the basics. How do Italian home cooks shop for pantry staples and fresh produce? After visiting an Italian deli that's been running since the 1960’s and her local fruit and vegetable shop, Silvia prepares a rustic Tuscan chickpea pasta for her daughter Luna, bakes two succulent and savoury Schiacciata breads, and makes her mothers apple and mascarpone cake. Proving that when an Italian pantry is well stocked, you only need a few fresh ingredients to create simple yet memorable meals.

Wednesday at 9.45pm on World Movies - Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

To save his own job, Alan gets radio colleague Pat laid off, but when the man returns to the station with a shotgun and a siege ensues, Alan is given the high-profile role of go-between, trying to appease both the hostage taker and armed police.
