Tax cuts approved, now to "religious freedoms"

Last week Parliament approved the tax cuts wanted by the federal government thanks to the support of a series of independents and with a reluctant OK by the Labor party.

Labor allowed the bill to pass, even though ideologically it remains contrary to cuts to higher income earners.

The federal government in the coming weeks will also have to face the thorny issue linked to the so-called "religious freedoms", a theme dear to the conservative right-wing of the Coalition, which believes that, following the "Yes" victory at the postal plebiscite on same-sex marriages, part of the Australian population feels compelled to accept a state of affairs that contrasts with their own religious beliefs.

Federal politics correspondent, Paul Scutti, reports.
