The Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini of Catania was opened in May 1890, but nor risks a total shut-down in 2020.

Internationally renowned bass Roberto Scandiuzzi is outraged that one of the most prestigious opera houses in Italy could disappear for ever.

"A large slice of Italian culture will die with the Bellini, if it closes", says Scandiuzzi who frequently performed in Catania at the start of his long successful career.

The Bellini has been in financial strife for many years and relied on government funds to keep afloat and it has now been placed under administration and a special Commissioner has been named to try and save it from total closure.
