Globally the number of new breast cancer cases is estimated to have risen to over two million in 2018, according to the American Institute for Cancer research. Travel writer and blogger Francesca Barbieri was one of those cases.

Francesca Barbieri talks openly about her traumatic experience.

“The worst moment is when you are told you have it”, says Francesca. “You can feel the situation is serious from the scared look in the eyes of who is about to tell you”.

She started her travel blog Fraintesa in 2004 to recount the stories of her travels around the world. Today she still wanders the remote corners of the world to encourage breast cancer awareness amongst women and persuade them to undergo regular screening. Recently, on her Asian tour, she held a talk on breast cancer prevention and awareness in Singapore.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and if diagnosed early is curable. In 2018, Belgium registered the highest percentage of cases with 113.3 women every one hundred thousand diagnosed with breast cancer. Australia is in 7th place, Italy not far behind in 9th place.

Francesca’s initial reaction was to hide her secret from almost everyone, with the exception of her parents and boyfriend.

“They helped me go through the most difficult moments. I am very lucky to have had someone close to me”.

Six months ago in a shocking video she broke the disturbing news to her blogger-community.

“Twice doctors told me it was nothing more than a harmless cyst until I asked for it to be removed and checked”.
