The US House Intelligence Committee says the whistle-blower complaint released on Thursday revealed a series of "damning allegations" concerning President Donald Trump's conduct, including a telephone call in which he sought information about a political opponent from Ukraine's president.

US President Donald Trump has described the grounds for his impeachment laid out by Democrats as a joke, after he was accused of pressuring his Ukrainian counterpart for domestic political reasons.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the launch of impeachment proceedings against the President after a whistle-blower reported a conversation between Mr Trump and the Ukraine President to the U-S intelligence inspector general in August.
