The air that you breathe these days, especially in some cities of south-east Australia, is among the worst in the world.

Melbourne had the worst air quality in the world on Tuesday 14 January due to the smoke generated by the fires in Victoria and NSW.

The situation is worrying not only for the most at risk categories such as the elderly, children, pregnant women or people suffering from heart or respiratory diseases, but also for healthy people.

How then can we protect ourselves from the invisible PM 2.5 - atmospheric particulate matter that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers, which is about 3% the diameter of a human hair-emitted by the smoke of fires? What are the life-saving precepts I can take?

We talked about it with Dr. Tony Bartone, president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA).
