COVID infection rate falls - but the number of deaths has increased

The worldwide weekly coronavirus infection rate has fallen for the first time since mid-February. But COVID-19 related deaths have increased. India and Brazil account for more than half of new infections.


The World Health Organisation says a total of 5-point-69 million coronavirus infections have been reported globally over the past seven days, down from 5-point-73 million the previous week.

Coronavirus-related deaths have risen though, from 88,000 to 93,000.

For a twelfth straight day India has recorded more than 300,000 new daily infections.

The nation's health system remains under intense pressure.

Coronavirus infections have spilled across the Indian border into Nepal, putting severe strain on the Himalayan nation's medical resources too.

In a sign of a gradual returning to normality in the United States, New York City's subway is to resume 24-hours operation.

U-S President Joe Biden says his country will "be in a very different position" on COVID by the end of the summer.

Meanwhile in Germany, Bavaria's famous Oktoberfest festivities have been cancelled for a second year in a row due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
