In January this year, a Japanese woman, a victim of domestic violence (DV) died in Hungary. What if you become a victim of DV in Sydney? What consular services available? We spoke to Yuichiro Nishida, Deputy Consul General at the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney.


The protection of Japanese nationals abroad is one of the key tasks of diplomatic missions abroad. The Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney works with the police and other local authorities on domestic violence, and offers services such as introducing lawyers and support groups.

The Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney covers New South Wales and the Northern Territory. If you live in other areas, please note that the place to seek advice is the diplomatic mission that has jurisdiction over that area.
