As governments across Australia crack down on distracted driving, AI-powered surveillance cameras capable of detecting non-compliance with mobile phones and seatbelts have been rolled out nationally from 1 July. RMIT University Professor Nirajan Shiwakoti says while the technological progress is commendable, a “holistic approach” is required for recent measures to be fully effective, including targeted resources and outreach to diverse communities. SBS Nepali spoke to Shiwakoti, who has been working in transport engineering for the past two decades, about the challenges in road safety and what can be done to address them.
