Kunga Sherpa, who began his Everest climbing journey in 2016, has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest nine times. During his visit to Australia in August, Sherpa spoke to SBS Nepali and shared his perspectives on the mountains and the world of mountaineering.
In the first episode of this two-part conversation, Kunga Sherpa talks about his third visit to Australia and discusses the key considerations climbers should make before attempting a mountain expedition.
What exactly do Sherpa guides, known around the world simply as "Sherpas," do? Is the number of Sherpa guides declining? Why does Kunga Sherpa hope that his own children will not enter this profession? He also explains why climbers need to be physically fit and financially prepared, and gives an insight into the costs involved in climbing mountains.
