Born in Makwanpur, south of Kathmandu in Nepal, the para taekwondo champion came to Australia for a holiday. Now she’s chasing a Paralympic medal for Australia in the LA28 Games.
Under special powers, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke expedited Srijana Ghising’s citizenship application so she could compete for Australia at upcoming tournaments.
She officially became an Australian citizen at a ceremony in Melbourne’s inner-west in June, just in time to represent Australia for the first time at the Gangwon-Chuncheon 2026 World Para Taekwondo Open Challenge in South Korea earlier this month.
The 26-year-old has now set her sights on the 2028 Paralympic Games to be held in Los Angeles. In this two-part podcast, she speaks of her love of the sport, proud moments of her career so far and spills the beans on what made her switch allegiance to representing Australia on the world stage.
