Lochan Rijal is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and scholar of ethnomusicology. He is a researcher of Nepali folk music and traditional instruments and has also been sharing his knowledge through teaching. While Rijal is well known for his use of traditional Nepali instruments like the sarangi, he also incorporates contemporary gear in his musical performances. Currently, Associate Professor Rijal is Head of the Department of Music at Kathmandu University’s School of Arts. He completed his PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Massachusetts and Kathmandu University. On the occasion of Tihar, Girish Subedi spoke with Rijal about the role of music during the festival of lights. Apology: We regret to inform you that in the previously published version of the interview, it was stated that Rijal attended Arizona State University and Visva-Bharati University (Shantiniketan); he actually attended the University of Massachusetts and Kathmandu University.
