Poet and translator Alka Atreya teaches Sanskrit at the University of Vienna. Atreya recently translated anthropologist Hannah Rauber’s book on Himalayan Khampas, “Of Salt and Rice”, into the Nepali language. The book delves into the lifestyle, culture, and disappearing traditions of the Bhote Khampa communities in Nepal’s Himalayan region. Nepal correspondent Girish Subedi caught up with Alka Atreya Chudal in Kathmandu at the launch of the translated book. She outlined her connection with Rauber, the sensitivities of interpreting Himalayan narratives, and her thoughts for the younger Nepalis looking to pursue opportunities overseas.
