For the first time in 13 years, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is returning to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl with a series of free outdoor concerts, inviting audiences to experience orchestral music under the stars in one of the city’s most loved public spaces.

Running from 10–14 February, the week-long program celebrates Australian excellence, featuring a diverse lineup of composers, conductors and creative voices. At the heart of the season is a significant cultural moment, with the premiere of a new musical Acknowledgment of Country by Cybec First Nations Composer in Residence James Henry.

Commissioned as part of the MSO’s ongoing Acknowledgment of Country Project, launched in 2019, the new work explores how respect for Country can be expressed through sound, offering a powerful and reflective opening to the concert experience. The premiere takes place during the third concert on Friday 13 February, marking an important moment for both the composer and the orchestra.

James Henry’s work also features in the final concert of the season, part of the 50 Years of ABC Classic celebration, which presents an all-Australian program showcasing the depth and strength of contemporary composition across the country.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s performances at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl offer audiences an opportunity to connect with music in a way that is open, welcoming and deeply grounded in Country.
