A 21-year-old medical student was doused with petrol and set on fire in full view of other students at a medical college in India. A man in his mid-twenties chased the woman in the college campus and immolated himself after setting her afire.

The woman who has been identified as K Lakshmi, a fourth-year medical student at School of Medical Education, Kottayam, Kerala, is still in a critical condition, while the man has succumbed to his burn injuries.

Two of the students who came to help Lakshmi have also sustained burns and are in a hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the man, Adarsh, who had come to the college to write a supplementary examination on Wednesday, walked into the classroom and poured petrol on himself and Lakshmi after she rebuffed his advances.

As Lakshmi ran out, he chased her and then set her afire before immolating himself.

Lakshmi has suffered 65% burns to her body. Adarsh reportedly died on Friday.

The state police have registered a case.
