Major Amit Deswal died fighting militants in Manipur in North-eastern India in April this year. Barely two months since his death, his 33-year-old wife, Neeta Deswal is now preparing to don the olive greens of the Indian Army.
Neeta is preparing for an interview with the Indian Army's Service Selection Board for joining the Officers Training Academy to join the force as an officer rejecting a job offer from Amit’s home state, Haryana.

"Initially, I was not sure about how to proceed with life after Amit's death, but the Army has taken care of me and my son like family. This is why I have decided to join the Army. It would be a tribute to my husband," Neeta told The Times of India.
Being the widow of a slain Army officer, Neeta has been allotted an accommodation in Delhi Cantonment where she is living with her son. She is undergoing coaching at the same institute where her late husband studied before joining the Army.
34-year-old Major Amit Deswal was posted with the Special Forces unit of the Indian Army in the insurgency affected area when he was killed in an encounter with militants on April 14 this year.
"We are proud of our daughter-in-law and support all her decisions. She has shown courage and determination after the tragedy. We are sure she will succeed in her objective of joining the Army," Rishi Ram, Neeta’s father-in-law said.
Neeta may get a call for the SSB interview in November this year.
