A group of more than ten people from Auckland have performed the biggest-ever Gatka at Gurudwara Singh Sabha in Christchurch. According to The Indian Weekender, the Gurudwara is managed by the New Zealand Sikh Society, South Island.
Gatka, which is a traditional martial art form historically associated with Sikh Gurus, is popular among the masses and is now recognized as a port in India after Gatka Foundation was formed. The foundation regularly organizes national competitions in which trained Gatka players participate.
A spokesman of the society, Jitender Sahi said, “Among those who performed were many children, who were born and brought up in New Zealand. It was so good to see how Sikh culture is persevered and growing here, especially among our next generation.”
Me Sahi also said that a new building for Gurudwara Singh Sabha has been selected at Stanmore Road and they have applied for consent from the council. The original Gurudwara building was destroyed in 2010 earthquake and they have been operating from temporary premises of Landsdowne Terrace.
