Driving through the Melbourne seat of Batman, it's hard not to notice the greenery - posters for Greens candidate Alex Bhathal and the party blanket the electorate.
The Greens are fighting a strong, visible battle for the seat and leader Richard Di Natale says the party has a chance of winning it off Labor MP David Feeney.
"People here who have voted Labor all their life are saying, 'Thank goodness we've got you here, we haven't seen a politician in this part of Batman before'," Mr Di Natale said at Reservoir North.
"We're very excited about our prospects here. I think there's a real chance we'll get over the line."
The seat is being contested for the Greens by Alex Bhathal, who is hoping to capitalise on Mr Feeney's setback over a negatively geared property.
She and Mr Di Natale were greeting voters from the time polls opened at St Joseph the Worker Primary School on Saturday.
Mr Di Natale charmed elderly couples talking to them in Italian as Ms Bhathal tried to shake the hand of everyone who came through.
Ms Bhathal said many Italian grandmothers had phoned her offering their support because of issues like fairer treatment for asylum seekers and gay marriage.
"Once you've got the nonnas of Darebin on your side, it's hard to not win," she said.
Voters at St Joseph's told AAP they just wanted the same person to be prime minister for an entire term.
"A good stable leader, that's what I want," Paul Abbenhauis said.
