"To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that Yoga will be done inside any federal parliament in the world. I don't believe that has even happened in India," said Mr Rajendra Yenkannamoole, the founder of Vasudeva Kriya Yoga.

Mr Yenkannamoole first took Yoga to the Victorian parliament in 2015, the year when the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

"In 2015, we had joined hands with the Indian Consulate in Melbourne to host the Yoga session at the Victorian state parliament. Since then, we've been joined by Victorian parliamentarians every year, to mark the occasion."

Taking it a step further, the International Day of Yoga will be formally celebrated at Australia's federal parliament on Monday, June 18.

"We will have a yoga session in the main hall, and it is expected that many federal parliamentarians will participate," said Mr Yenkannamoole.

"This has come about through the initiative of Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, and I hope that many MPs, including him, will be there to mark the historic moment."

The event also has the blessings of the Indian embassy in Canberra and the Indian High Commissioner, Dr AM Gondane is expected to attend along with his colleagues.

Mr Yenkannamoole said, "My message to everyone on the International Day of Yoga is that each one of us should believe in health care over Medicare."

"Health is precious – no amount of wealth can bring it back, if you lose it."

"Self help is better than medical help and each one of us must commit to it."

"World health has to dawn from each individual, because healthy individuals make a healthy home, community and country."
