A UK-based Indian couple has been accused of getting their adopted son killed for insurance money.

Non-resident Indian couple Arti Loknath (53) and her husband Kanwaljitsinh Raijada (28) allegedly plotted the murder of 13-year-old Gopal for the insurance policy worth Rs. 1.20 Crore Rupees ($240,000) which they had bought as a cover for his life, news agency PTI reported.

Ashok Tilva, an officer of the Gujarat Police said the couple conspired with another man to adopt Gopal in 2015 and then got him killed after getting an insurance cover for him. He said the alleged accomplice in the crime, named Nitish had also lived in London in the past.

“Arti and Kanwaljitsinh conspired with one Nitish Mund to adopt Gopal, get him insured and then kill him so that they could get insurance money,” said Inspector Tilva.

Unidentified motorbike-riding assailants attacked the boy with a knife on February 8 while he was with Nitish. He succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Tuesday.

Police said the entire conspiracy was unravelled after Nitish’s arrest.

Inspector Tilva said Gopal was living with Nitish who hired the assailants to attack the boy.

"Hired assailants attacked Gopal and Harsukh Patel after they came out of a vehicle at a pre-decided place at Keshod," Inspector Tilva said.

The police has started the process to arrest the accused couple who are in UK.
