An Indian man continues to be in a critical condition after he was found at a footpath in Auckland on Tuesday night. He was rushed to the hospital after he was "severely beaten", the police said.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Satpal Singh, a native of Punjab in India, the Indian Weekender reports.

He was finally identified with the help of the community members after police issued a public appeal for help to identify him.

"It is critically important to identify this male, so his family and friends can offer him support while he remains in a serious condition," Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Bright said while asking for public assistance.

Mr Singh is believed to have been attacked with a baseball bat and left on a footpath in Auckland a little after 10 pm on the night of 15th August. He was hit at the back of his head while walking back from work.

Indian High Commissioner Sanjiv Kohli is reportedly in touch with the family of Mr Singh in India.

Satpal is currently in New Zealand on a three-year work visa after first arriving as an international student in November 2013.

NZ Police are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the assault or may be able to provide any information about the incident.
