An Indian-origin dairy owner in New Zealand has given a would-be robber a chase despite being shot in an attempted armed robbery.

Satinder Singh and his wife Harjinder Kaur were sitting behind the counter of their Edgecumbe store when a man with a mask came in and pointed a gun at Singh on Tuesday evening.

The would-be robber placed a bag on the counter and demanded cash. But Mr Singh immediately got up from his chair and raced to grab a bat while the alleged offender fired his airgun.

Mr Singh received a pallet injury at the bottom of his neck but he ran behind the masked intruder and chased him out of the store.

Harjinder Kaur immediately called the emergency helpline 111 and the police arrived within minutes from the police station which is around the corner from the store.

Mr Singh’s pallet wound was described as a “minor injury” and the ambulance staff treated him at the scene.

Police say there were two people involved in the attempted robbery and they had been screening the place for sometime before they struck on Tuesday.

The alleged offender was unable to take anything from the store.

The couple has owned the store since 2006.

“This is the second time people have tried to rob us. The first time was in December last year, and nothing was taken that time either,” Ms Kaur told NZ Herald.

Police are seeking assistance from the public for information about the alleged offenders, both of whom are believed to be under 20.
