More than 22,000 people were attending the concert when a local man, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the concert at 10:08pm on Sunday night (4:08pm Monday AEST, from his hotel room. His companion, identified as Marilou Danley, was initially a person of interest. Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo had said police were searching for Danley and two cars in their hunt for clues as to the shooter’s identity and motives.
It was soon revealed that Marilou is an Australian citizen who had lived in Gold Coast for more than a decade before moving to US more than 20 years ago. She is possibly of an Indonesian descent. She is understood to be a former housemate of the suspected killer, Stephen Paddock.
The police have, however, confirmed now that Ms Danley is no longer a person of interest.
News.com.au has reported that Las Vegas detectives confirmed that they do not believe Marilou Danley was involved in the shooting on the Las Vegas strip. Ms Danley was located outside US and was cleared of any involvement in the shooting.
Police have also confirmed that unlike earlier reports that the gunman was killed by officers, the shooter was in fact found dead in his room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and police believe he killed himself.
“LVMPD SWAT breached the hotel room and found the suspect dead,” police said in a statement.
The gunman’s identity has been confirmed as 64-year-old, Stephen Craig Paddock, a white male from Mesquite, Nevada. His home is currently being searched and his photograph has not yet been released by police.
The Clark County Fire Department estimate that approximately 406 people have been transported to nearby hospitals and 50 people are dead.
This is being called the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
