A Sikh temple in the Cologne city in western Germany was vandalized with racist graffiti on Tuesday.
The words ‘must leave’ were scrawled in the German language on the main entrance gate of the gurdwara.
Coming out in support of the Sikh community, the Indian Consulate in Germany issued a statement on Twitter, saying that the consular office had taken up the matter with the German authorities.
The Consulate also promised protection to the affected gurdwara.
The incident coming in the wake of Christchurch shooting in two mosques that killed 50 worshippers and left dozens injured, the local Sikh community is concerned over the incident.
Germany has a Sikh population of more than 15,000 people and around 35 gurdwaras are located across the country.
In April 2016, the news of a bomb explosion at a Sikh temple in the western city of Essen had rocked the entire Sikh community.
Three Muslim teenagers were accused of setting off a home-made bomb outside a Sikh prayer hall where a wedding was taking place, which left three people, including a priest injured.
In 2017, all three accused were sentenced to up to seven years in juvenile detention for carrying out the ‘religiously-motivated’ attack.
