"I am honoured to accept the invitation of my friend Prime Minister Modi to visit India in January," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said while delivering the Lowy Lecture at Sydney Town Hall on October 3.

Mr Morrison said that among other things, his visit to India will focus on bilateral trade.

"The visit will be accompanied by a business delegation that I have invited Ashok Jacob, Chair of the Australia-India Council Board, to lead. This will bring Government and business together to pursue our India Economic Strategy that has captured the attention of our Indian partners and must now be realised."

"My visit will be another step in cementing India in the top tier of Australia’s partnerships," he added.

India is Australia's fifth-largest trading partner, with annual bilateral trade exceeding $22 billion last year (in 2018).

The exact dates of Mr Morrison's India visit are yet to be revealed, and the Prime Minister's office can't confirm whether this invitation includes participation in the Indian Republic Day parade on January 26, which also coincides with Australia Day.

But Mr Morrison did give an indication about the likely date of his visit when he said at the Lowy Lecture last night that he will "deliver the inaugural address at the Raisina Dialogue."

The Raisina Dialogue is scheduled for January 14-16 next year, with a stated commitment of addressing the most challenging issues facing the global community.

The current Prime Ministers of Australia and India have enjoyed a warm relationship, with Mr Morrison tweeting in Hindi after a meeting in Japan, saying "How good is Modi!"
In Sydney last night, Mr Morrison heaped praise on India's economic growth.

"India is a great success story of our region.  A land of durable institutions and shared values," he said, adding that it was "a natural partner for Australia."

Mr Morrison also mentioned that last week along the sidelines of the United Nations meeting, another relationship had been forged.

"We took another step, when Foreign Ministers of the Quad countries - the USA, Australia, India and Japan - met in New York. This is the first time the Quad has met at Ministerial level," he said.

"It is a key forum for exchanging views on challenges facing the region, including taking forward practical cooperation on maritime, terrorism and cyber issues."

The January 2020 visit will be Mr Morrison's first to India after becoming Prime Minister.

Australia-India relationship is expected to grow further with India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visiting Australia later this year.
