Six men have been booked under the blasphemy law for "desecrating" a Sikh turban in Punjab province of Pakistan.

29-year-old Mahinder Paal Singh, a Sikh, complained to the police that his turban was thrown during a scuffle while he was travelling from Faisalabad to Multan on Sunday.

The accused appeared before a court in Chichawatni on Tuesday.

Mr Singh told Pakistan's Dawn newspaper that the scuffle broke out when he and some other passengers complained to the bus operator about the slow speed of the bus.

"The staff misbehaved, pushed me and threw my turban, which is very sacred, away," he told AFP news agency.

"They desecrated my religious symbol, so I decided to lodge a blasphemy case."

Blasphemy, the charge the accused face in this case, carries the death penalty and is an extremely sensitive issue in Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Rights activists have criticised the country's blasphemy laws, which they say are often used to carry out personal vendettas against minorities.
