According to Indian Express a 14-year-old boy in Mumbai (India) has jumped off the terrace of his building, allegedly as per instructions of an online game. The deceased has been identified as Manpreet Singh. Manpreet was a year nine student and it is believed that he was playing the dreaded online game the ‘Blue Whale Challenge’ when he committed this act. Police, however, are yet to reach a conclusion over the motive.
It is believed that neighbours saw Manpreet walking on the edge of the terrace in Sher-e-Punjab in Andheri East and tried to talk him into getting off the edge but Manpreet did not listen and jumped. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and was declared dead on admission.
This incident has sparked a fear amongst people regarding the dangerous online ‘Blue Whale Challenge’ game.
What is Blue Whale Challenge?
The Blue Whale suicide challenge originated in Russia last year and was shared in closed groups on social media. It is believed that the administrators of this game set their members, mostly teenagers, a set of fifty tasks that need to be completed in fifty days. The intensity and difficulty of the tasks increase with days and on completing the challenge, members are asked to carve a shape of a blue whale on their forearm. The last challenge, however, asks member to take their own life.
