41-year-old Uber driver Muhammad Naveed has been sentenced to six years and four months in jail for raping a 22-year-old female tourist in October 2015, SBS World News reports.
Naveed’s victim was intoxicated and walking alone in Kings Cross when he offered her a lift in his car.
A surveillance camera vision showed him buying a pack of condoms and a water bottle from a nearby store before committing the crime, while his victim was asleep in the back seat of his car.
He then pulled over in a side street of an eastern suburb and raped the woman. The victim had a blood alcohol level of .231 and woke up to find Naveed on top of her.
During the trial, Naveed did not deny he had sex with the woman but he maintained it was consensual.
A jury pronounced him guilty in February this year.
The judge said Naveed would have been aware of the woman's drunken state when he picked her up near a bar in Kings Cross.
He has been sentenced to a minimum six years and four months in prison on Tuesday at the Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday. He will be eligible for parole in June 2023.
