The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) recorded a surge in the number of appeals filed against onshore student visa refusals. Experts believe that the change in visa rules and more rejections of onshore student visa applications could be the reasons behind it.

A record number of onshore migrants in Australia have reached the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) to appeal against the rejection of their onshore student visa applications.

Within October 2024 to March 2025, as many as 13,640 appeals against onshore student visa rejections have reached ART.

This is subsequently higher than six months prior.

The data reveals that 8,261 migrants had appealed against a cancelled student visa from July to October in 2024.

Experts believe that the tightening of rules has made it harder for many temporary migrants to extend their stay in Australia by using a subsequent student visa.

As of July 1 2024, Australia closed the student visa pathway for those on visitor visas and temporary graduate visas.

Arun Bansal, a migration agent, claims that the high refusals for student visas and the overall sentiment of reducing net migration are the key reasons behind more people applying against their onshore student visa refusals.

But what is driving these rejections? How does the appeal process work? And what can applicants do to improve their chances?
