A recent SBS commissioned study found that 1 in 5 Australians have experienced racism. And Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 25 per cent more likely to encounter racism than Australians of other ethnic origins.

A recent SBS commissioned study found that 1 in 5 Australians have experienced racism. And Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 25 per cent more likely to encounter racism than Australians of other ethnic origins.


Racism is an ongoing experience for 97 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people surveyed in a Victorian study by The Lowitja Institute.

Andrew Meehan heads ANTaR, an independent national network working in support of rights and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people agrees that the high prevalence of racism faced by First Peoples is based on a lack of knowledge from the wider society.
