Despite rising living costs and economic pressures, millions of Australians are stepping up to support those in need through volunteering. The latest data from Volunteering Australia shows that 9.5 million people volunteered across the country in 2025. While Punjabis call it 'seva' (the spirit of selfless service), Australians often describe it as “helping a mate” or “looking out for each other”. Across cultures, the shared spirit of giving continues to unite communities. SBS Punjabi spoke to several Punjabi volunteers to understand what inspires them to support vulnerable people during times of crisis. Their stories are deeply moving.
