Prime Minister Scott morrison says ana elected prime minister will remain as leader for full term under new rules.

Federal Liberal Party MPs have decided to toughen the rules for overthrowing a sitting prime minister.

Liberal Party leaders met in an unscheduled meeting on Monday evening in Canberra.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says two-thirds partyroom majority will be necessary to trigger a change in leadership.

The step comes after Malcolm Turnbull was dumped as prime minister in August.
