தட்டம்மை நோய் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் இல்லை என்றே நம்பபட்டுவந்தது. ஆனால் தற்போது சிட்னி பெரு நகரில் ஏற்கனவே மூவருக்கு தட்டம்மை நோய் இருப்பது மருத்துவமனைகளால் உறுதி செய்யப்பட்ட நிலையில் நான்காவது நபர் ஒருவருக்கும் தட்டம்மை இருப்பதாக NSW Health உறுதி செய்துள்ளது. தட்டம்மை கண்ட நான்குபேரும் சிட்னி பெரு நகரின் பல பகுதிகளுக்கு, குறிப்பாக உணவு விடுதிகள், பேருந்து, ரயில் என்று பொது இடங்களுக்கு சென்று வந்தவர்கள் என்பதால் பலருக்கு இந்த நோய் தோற்றி இருக்கலாம் என்று அஞ்சப்படுகிறது.
தட்டம்மை வராமல் தடுக்கும் நோய் எதிர்ப்பு ஊசிகள் போட்டுக்கொண்டவர்களுக்கு இந்த நோய் தாக்கும் அபாயம் குறைவு என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. அதே வேளையில் தடுப்பூசி போடதாவர்களுக்கு தட்டம்மை கண்டவர்களின் இருமல், தும்மல் போன்றவற்றிலிருந்து நோய் கிருமிகள் காற்று வழி பரவி அவர்களைத் தாக்கும் அபாயம் உண்டு என்று மருத்துவர்கள் எச்சரித்துள்ளனர்.
Sydney residents are being urged to watch for symptoms of measles after four cases have been reported in the city in December.
The most recent case, a known contact of an earlier case, visited numerous locations around Leichhardt, Pyrmont and Neutral Bay, and used inner west public transport from December 23-24 while infectious.
NSW Health acting director of communicable diseases Sean Tobin said the cases highlight the importance of getting vaccinated.
"A highly effective measles vaccine has been freely available for many years and it is vital for everyone, including adults and children, to have two doses of the measles vaccine during their lifetime," Dr Tobin said on Wednesday.
"Those people who have not received two doses of measles vaccine should be alert to the symptoms of measles in the coming days and weeks as the measles cases have moved in many parts of Sydney."
The four people with measles reported since early December had spent a significant amount of time in the Sydney metropolitan area while infectious.
Symptoms include fever, sore eyes and a cough, followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash.
"Children or adults born during or since 1966 who do not have documented evidence of receiving two doses of measles vaccine, or evidence of previous measles infection, are likely to be susceptible to measles and should be vaccinated as soon as possible," Dr Tobin said.
