இருபத்து நான்கு வயதான அவானி சதுர்தேவி, கடந்த திங்களன்று இந்திய வான்படையின் போர்விமானமொன்றின் பைலட்டாகப் பறப்பொன்றை மேற்கொண்டு சரித்திரம் படைத்துள்ளார்.
இந்த வாரம், 30 நிமிடங்களுக்கு மேல் MiG21 Bison ரக விமானத்தில் அவர் பறப்பினை மேற்கொண்டுவிட்டு வெற்றிகரமாகத் தளம் திரும்பியுள்ளதாக இந்திய விமானப்படை தெரிவித்துள்ளது.
தற்போது இந்திய ஆயுதப்படைகளில் பலமடங்கு பெண்கள் பல உயர் பதவிகளில் இருக்கின்றனர், சண்டைகளில் நேரடியாகக் கலந்து கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால், 2016ம் ஆண்டுக்கு முன்னர் வெறும் 2.5வீதமான பெண்களே இந்திய ஆயுதப் படைகளில் அதுவும் ஆயுதம் தாங்காத பணிகளிலேயே ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டனர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாகும்.
Avani, who comes from a small town named Deoland in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa, was always fascinated with flying and like numerous of girls across the country, Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin to go on a space mission, was her inspiration.
She did her Bachelors in Technology from Banasthali University, Rajasthan and during this time, she joined the Flying Club and passed the Indian Air Force exam.
Avani’s mother Savita said her daughter had kept the news of her appearing for IAF exam a secret till the last minute. It was only after she received the selection letter, the news about Avani joining the IAF was disclosed.
She is currently posted at No. 23 Squadron (Panthers) and is from the first batch of three women officers who were commissioned as fighter pilots in the IAF in June 2016.
NDTV reports Ms Chaturvedi would be able to fly fighter jets like Sukhoi and Tejas once she completes stage-3 training at Bidar in Karnataka next year.
