Sri Lanka lost their half batsmen in 10 overs. Sri Lanka owed their score to Thisara Perera, who top scored for the defending champion with a 40-run knock off 29 balls. The left-hander also added 44 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Angelo Mathews (20).
Mathews and Perera's partnership ended when the former was out in a bizarre manner. He tried to duck a slow full toss from Dwayne Bravo but the ball kissed the bat and flew towards Dinesh Ramdin, who took an easy catch.
Perera kept fighting hard and found a few boundaries towards the end before holing it up to Andre Russell off Dywane Bravo (2/21).
West Indies opener Johnson Charles (10) and Marlon Samuels (3) were victims of turning balls with Milinda Siriwardana (2/33) and Jeffrey Vandersay troubling the batsmen a lot.
Fletcher sent in place of Gayle, who was nursing an hamstring injury, punished the Srilankan bowlers by smashing six fours and five sixes in his knock that came off 64 balls.
His innings was a superb mix of caution and aggression considering the conditions. His monstrous sixes off Siriwardana at the start of the 15th over nearly pushed Sri Lanka out of the game and it was matter of time that West Indies completed the chase.
West Indies won the game by 7 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

AB de Villiers was dropped twice by Afghanistan, which proved costly as his spectacular 64 (29 balls) helped South Africa win by 37 runs on Sunday.
South Africa chose to bat first after winning the toss and scored a formidable 209/5 in their 20 overs.
After South Africa lost Hashim Alma early on, opener Quinton de Kock (45) continued his impressive show with the bat and added 65 for the second wicket with captain Faf du Plessis.
Ab de Villiers was first dropped by Samiullah Shenwari on 26 off his own bowling and then again on 35 by the same fielder at midwicket off leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
Rashid suffered most from De Villiers’s onslaught as the batsman plundered 29 runs in the 17th over with four sixes and a boundary to race past his fifty in 24 deliveries.
De Villiers added 76 for the fourth wicket with left-hander JP Duminy (29 not out), who guided South Africa past the 200-run mark with David Miller (19). Image
The Afghans made a great start with Mohammad Shahzad leading the charge with 44 off 19 balls.
Shahzad, who hit five sixes and three fours, tore into paceman Kyle Abbott in the second over and took 22 runs off him.
The right-hander took Afghanistan to 47-0 in three overs, before paceman Chris Morris uprooted his stumps.

Chris Morris took four wickets that earned him the player of the match award, while leg-spinner Imran Tahir and fast bowlers Abbott and Kagiso Rabada all picked up two wickets each.
Afghanistan, who also lost their opening match against defending champions Sri Lanka, have little chance to advance past the Super 10 stage after their second loss.
