The Belgian-born Senator Mathias Cormann migrated to Australia in the mid-1990s, becoming a citizen in 2000. He was first elected to parliament in 2007, and rising through the ranks of the Liberal party, quickly developed a reputation for being a cool and reliable politician. "You know, Australia is just a great country. We have got migrants here who come from all corners of the world. What I say to all of my fellow migrants always is that Australia is a country where if you put your shoulder to the wheel and work hard and do the best you can to make a difference, there is no limit to what you can achieve. I have been a fortunate beneficiary of that reality, that great Australian reality." (М. Cormann).
