From battles in Kyiv to battling COVID - one scientist's story

Ukrainian scientist Iryna Zaiets, who is now working in Australia (SBS).jpg

Scientist Iryna Zaiets fled Kyiv earlier this year with her infant daughter as Russian forces started targeting the Ukrainian capital. She initially feared she would struggle to find work in Australia, but is now back in the lab working on COVID vaccine development.

Iryna Zaiets' career as a scientist looked like it was all but over.

As Russian forces closed in on Kyiv - the capital of Ukraine - earlier this year, she fled the city with her eight-month-old daughter.

Ms Zaiets had been working as a bio-engineer for pharmaceutical companies, and there were reports of Russian troops targeting Ukrainian scientists such as herself.
