The Ukrainian community of Victoria marks the 204th anniversary of the birth of Ukraine's bard, Taras Shevchenko. On March we honour the immeasurable contributions of Shevchenko to Ukrainian culture and the formation of a Ukrainian national identity and national consciousness. The concert dedicated to the 204th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko's birthday was held on March 25th in the Ukrainian hall, Essendon, 3-11 Russell Street. (The Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (AUV), also known as Hromada in Ukrainian, is a community based not-for-profit organisation that was founded in 1949 by Ukrainians who settled here in Victoria after having to flee Ukraine during WW 2. The 9th of September 1949 is a significant date in the history of the AUV as this is when 170 Ukrainians from across the state came together to form an organised community, approve a Constitution and elect a President and Board of Directors).
