Victorian police say they now know the identity of a man who was hit by a train in Melbourne's north in July and been in hospital ever since.

Forty-two soldiers have been killed and 22 injured in an attack near the town of Tessit in Mali.

International Maritime Organisation coordinator Frederick Kenney has told a news conference that the centre is already receiving many dozens of phone calls and emails asking about exports, as ship owners show "tremendous interest" in Ukraine grain, following a recent deal aimed at ending Russia's blockade of its ports.

Mr Kenney says he has so far authorised the departure of 12 vessels, as well as the arrival of four ships to pick up new cargo.

The New South Wales government says it is considering a plan to pay top teachers more to stop them leaving the classroom. Education minister Sarah Mitchell says the state has some of the best teachers in the world - but too many are leaving the classroom and moving into management roles or leaving the job altogether
