The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Marise Payne has announced the appointment of the new High Commissioner to Pakistan.
In a media release, the Foreign Minister has said that Australia and Pakistan enjoy a long-standing relationship built on shared strategic interests, Commonwealth heritage and strong community links.
“Our countries have a common interest in promoting peace and stability in our region. Our two nations cooperate on defence, transnational crime and border protection, and work together to combat terrorism and people smuggling.
"Australia has a large and flourishing Pakistani community. Our nation remains an important education partner for Pakistan, with significant numbers of Pakistani students choosing to study in Australia. We also share important economic and sporting ties.”
"As fellow members of the Human Rights Council, we are united in our commitment to promoting human rights.
"Our people-to-people links are strong and growing. Australia has a large and flourishing Pakistani community. Our nation remains an important education partner for Pakistan, with significant numbers of Pakistani students choosing to study in Australia. We also share important economic and sporting ties.”
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website, Dr Shaw is a senior career officer with DFAT and is currently working as Assistant Secretary, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking Taskforce.
Previously, Dr Shaw has held various senior positions in different global organisations that include the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, and as the IAEA Representative to the United Nations in New York.
He has also served as the Assistant Secretary, Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office.
Dr Shaw holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University (ANU), and a Bachelor of Science (Hon) from the University of Wollongong.
Margaret Thompson is currently Australia's High Commissioner to Pakistan.
