Farooq Ashraf Awan, who is visiting from Pakistan to Australia, has been an umpire in Pakistan for the past 35 years, including almost twenty years as an umpire at the district level in Pakistan. In a conversation with SBS Urdu, he talks about his long journey in cricket. He shares the challenges and responsibilities of umpiring and highlights the importance of human judgment, especially with new technology changing the game. Farooq Ashraf noted that while modern technology and scientific approaches aid the sport, the core of umpiring relies on human decision-making ability. He further stated that umpiring laws are uniform worldwide, and the real distinction lies in match control.
Discussing how to pursue a career in umpiring, he explained that one must first pass an examination at the district level, followed by an additional test for the national level; to umpire at the international level, however, nomination by one's national cricket board is a prerequisite.
