Pakistan came up with a very progressive population policy in the 1950s, but unfortunately for many reasons, it didn't work out, says researcher, sociologist Vasudha Mohanka, who is currently working on a research project at the University of Wollongong.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) published the latest population figures in Australia in December highlighting that Pakistani community in Australia is aiding the population to thrive due to a high fertility rate.

The podcast looks at the notion of associating fertility with the females only.

SBS Urdu spoke to Vasudha Mohanka, whose research primarily focuses on the politics of body and reproduction in India.

Ms Mohanka explained how to interpret such things by keeping in mind the South Asian socio-economic and cultural factors, ideological constructions, politics and identities in mind.

She also talked about family structures, gender and power dynamics, the spacing in population control, the improved quality of life among migrants settling in first-world countries, poverty levels and rural/urban differences in countries such as Pakistan and India.
