The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has warned that the growing promotion of low-cost unregistered boats on social media, rising demand, and limited public awareness are driving this trend. Justin Williams, Manager Operations (North) at AMSA, highlighted the risks posed by the increase in illegal charter vessels during the summer, emphasising passenger safety and legal compliance.

Justin Williams, Manager Operations (North) at AMSA, says the rise in illegal charter boats this summer is driven by low-cost promotion on social media, high demand, and low public awareness.

Boats operating without approval or meeting safety standards pose serious risks to passengers and crew.

“Hiring out boats without approval and without meeting safety requirements is a major risk.”

He warned that owners of illegal vessels may face heavy fines and legal action.

“We urge the public to protect themselves and their families by booking only with registered and approved operators.”
