UNICEF has called for urgent safety reforms across Pakistan’s hospitals after 14 newborn babies died in a fire at PIMS in Islamabad. The tragedy has intensified concerns about fire prevention, emergency preparedness and accountability in public health care facilities in Pakistan.
Initial reports indicate the fire began in an air-conditioning unit and spread rapidly through oxygen connections. Fifteen newborns were reportedly in the ward, with only one surviving. Dr Günter Boussery, Chief of Health at UNICEF Pakistan, said: “Every newborn deserves a safe start in life, and every mother and child should be able to receive care in a safe and secure environment.”
Pakistan’s Prime Minister has ordered an investigation, while Federal Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri has been suspended. Dr Günter Boussery, Chief of Health at UNICEF Pakistan, said hospitals need effective systems for “fire prevention, early detection, response, and safe evacuation”, supported by trained staff, reliable infrastructure and regular emergency drills.
