The opening of the Senate confirmation hearing for United States Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has become chaotic after deliberate delays from Democrats and protesters.
US president Donald Trump has chosen Mr Kavanaugh to take over for retired justice Anthony Kennedy, but it has raised fears the court would become partisan if he is confirmed.
